The State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology consists of three sub-laboratories: the Membrane Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Sub-laboratory (Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences), the Membrane Biophysics and Membrane Bioengineering Sub-laboratory (Tsinghua University), and the Ion Channel and Receptor Molecular Biology Sub-laboratory (Peking University). The biological membrane is a supramolecular system composed of a lipid bilayer and membrane proteins. Elucidating the structure and function of biological membranes and their interrelationships is the basic task of biological membrane research. The main research directions of the State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology include: ① membrane protein structure and function; ② dynamic regulation of biological membranes; ③ transmembrane signal transduction; ④ transmembrane ion transport; ⑤ membrane biotechnology and applications. The research objectives are: with membrane biology as the center, using the methods of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology and biophysics, through interdisciplinary cooperation, to clarify the relationship between biological membrane structure and function at the molecular and cellular levels, reveal the basic processes and regulatory mechanisms of biological membrane material exchange, energy conversion and signal transduction, and their changing laws under conditions such as diseases, and to make original research results at the international advanced level in the field of membrane biology research.
