Event Calendar Current Exhibitions Sekisui Museum Official Social Media Announcements List of Announcements Greetings Sekisui Museum is based on the Sekisui Kaikan Foundation, which was established in 1930 by Kawakita Kyutaya (pen name: Handeishi) as a base for promoting local culture and social welfare activities. Since becoming a registered museum in 1975, it has held locally rooted exhibitions at its exhibition facility in Marunouchi, Tsu City, and has been well-liked by local residents. In 2010, the name of the corporation was changed to Sekisui Museum Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, and a new exhibition facility was built in Chitoseyama (Tarumi, Tsu City), which has a connection to Handeishi, and was relocated and reopened in May 2011. Sekisui Museum's collection is centered on materials formerly owned by the Kawakita family, who were wealthy Ise merchants during the Edo period. The collection covers a wide range of fields, including tea ceremony utensils, Japanese paintings, Western paintings, ancient books and classics, ukiyo-e, and historical materials related to Ise merchants. The museum also preserves and manages many works and related materials by Kawakita Kyudayu, the 16th head of the Kawakita family and a well-known ceramicist.
