Leukodystrophy, referred to as LD, is a series of rare inherited diseases that affect the white matter of the central nervous system, causing demyelination and possibly accompanied by peripheral nervous system abnormalities. It mainly includes more than 50 diseases such as adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy, GLD), Alexander disease, Canavan disease (spongiform leukodystrophy), Pelizaeus-Merzheimer disease (PMD), Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome (AGS), Vanishing White Matter (VWM), etc. The prevalence of these diseases is mostly less than one in 50,000, which can be said to be rare among rare diseases. There are about 1 million patients worldwide, or one in 7,000 people. Since LD is a disease caused by gene mutation, there is no fundamental cure for it in current medicine, and it can only be treated symptomatically. Because it is a rare disease, many doctors are not familiar with it. Once misdiagnosed, precious treatment opportunities will be delayed. If the disease enters a rapid development period, current medicine is powerless to save it.
