: The Cardinal Colonna Gallery - also known at the time as the Galleria Nuova - was built in 1730 by the architect Paolo Posi in place of a long corridor, decorated, as some late seventeenth-century guides report, with the coats of arms of families related to the Colonna. The building is divided into three bodies: two arms and a central rotunda, supported by columns veneered in giallo antico, which are said to have come from the Pantheon and until then had been kept in the basement of the palace. The structure was originally intended by Cardinal Girolamo II to be a library and to house the increased pictorial and archaeological collection. The Gallery is connected to the garden by two bridges, but the last room, connecting with the Sala della Colonna Bellica, had not yet been finished at the time of the cardinal, who died in 1763, while the opposite area, which served as a ballroom at the time of the tenant, the French ambassador, had its vault and frieze decorated by Annibale Angelini from Perugia. And it was in this very room, in which at the time a Deposition perhaps by Federico Zuccari could be seen in the background, that the baptism ceremony of the Savoy twins, Maria Teresa and Maria Anna (the future Empress of Austria), took place in the presence of Pius VII in 1803. The event was recorded in two paintings, as a pendant. Over the years, the Cardinal Colonna Gallery was used as the family archive, which was originally located in the southern corner of the church of the SS. Apostoli, in the building later renovated by Niccolò Michetti.
