"Germany and its refugees" The reception of thousands of "foreigners" in the summer of 2015 was euphorically described in the media as a "German miracle". The refugees themselves hardly appeared in this perspective. The narrative of the "welcoming culture" was followed by a rollercoaster of discourses on the impending state failure, the limit of what could be tolerated or sexual assaults. The focus was primarily on the nation's well-being and the "refugee" became the cause of national distress. Uwe Becker analyses these discourses and traces the narratives that were built up during the "long summer of flight". He shows how they rest in the collective memory, can be activated at any time and continue to legitimise a restrictive refugee policy to this day.
